L-Carnitine Monograph

چکیده
Introduction A trimethylated amino acid, roughly similar in structure to choline, L-carnitine is a cofactor required for transformation of free long-chain fatty acids into acylcarnitines, and for their subsequent transport into the mitochondrial matrix, where they undergo beta-oxidation for cellular energy production. Conditions that appear to benefit from exogenous supplementation of L-carnitine include anorexia, chronic fatigue, cardiovascular disease, diphtheria, hypoglycemia, male infertility, muscular myopathies, and Rett syndrome. Preterm infants, dialysis patients, and HIV-positive individuals seem to be prone to a deficiency of L-carnitine and benefit from supplementation. Although discovered in 1905, the crucial role of L-carnitine in metabolism was not elucidated until 1955, and its deficiency was not described until 1972. The most significant source of L-carnitine in human nutrition is meat, although humans can synthesize L-carnitine from dietary amino acids.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine Monograph
Introduction Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) is an ester of the trimethylated amino acid, L-carnitine, and is synthesized in the human brain, liver, and kidney by the enzyme ALC-transferase. Acetyl-L-carnitine facilitates the uptake of acetyl CoA into the mitochondria during fatty acid oxidation, enhances acetylcholine production, and stimulates protein and membrane phospholipid synthesis. ALC, simila...
متن کاملLevocarnitine induced seizures in patients on valproic acid: A negative systematic review
OBJECTIVE Warnings of L-carnitine induced seizures are recorded on product monographs and pharmacy databases, without any referenced literature. This medication can potentially improve the hospital course in those patients with valproic acid (VPA) induced hyperammonemic encephalopathy, but may be withheld because of this warning. The goal was to perform an extensive systematic review of the lit...

Background: The benefit effect of L-carnitine is proposed for treatment of obesity as long time periods. So, in the present study, effect of L-carnitine on serum FSH, LH and testosterone levels in adult male rats is evaluated. Materials and Methods: Rats were treated different doses of L-carnitine tartarate daily for 16 days, peritoneally. The control group was treated saline as vehicle. After ...
متن کاملEffect of Aerobic Training and L-Carnitine Consumption on Some Oxidative Stress Factors in Diabetic Rat kidney
Background and Aim : The use of non-enzymatic antioxidants in food supplements and proper exercise can have a positive effect on decreasing oxidative stress by free radical hunting. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aerobic training and consumption of l-carnitine on some of the oxidative stress factors in diabetic kidney. Materials and Methods: In this experimental stu...
متن کاملThe Effect of Aerobic Training and L- Carnitine on BCL2 and Mitochondrial Enzymes of Rat\'s Kidney
Objective: Diabetes causes free radical production, oxidative stress and alterations in mitochondrial enzymes and apoptosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aerobic exercise and consumption of L-carnitine on BCL2 and some mitochondrial enzymes of the kidney in diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 45 male wistar rats (200-300 gr) were simp...
